A few questions remain. If U live on the outskirts of a city &
presently receive all analog terrestrial channels, will the same
situation apply with digital tv, ie: reception of both metropolitan
and regional tv channels, What is the range of digital television
in Australia ~ approximately. (ie: 60 km radius, 100 km radius).

Do these 15 channels commence on January 1, 2009 or do we
have to wait until April 2009 when Ten launches it's 24 sports
channel called One ?!?!?

Do I need to rescan all the channels once all these channels become
available or are they already there (as previously recently scanned as
of yesterday, there were 20 TV channels & 4 radio stations, many of
which were simulcasting the same programming,
hence some redundancy there).

It looks like a frickin' Dog's Breakfast at the mo, for FRICK's sake
~!!!

Anyway here's some references for now. I'm gonna hassle all the
commercial channels with a lot of questions over the phone over the
coming few months, until they get sick and tired of moi ~!!!

It might be drivel 2 U, but at *least* this backwater of a country
*finally*
catches up with more civilized countries such as Canada and the US.

Finally a decent choice of FTA TV channels for *all* Australians to
enjoy ~!!!

Or do U enjoy the nostalgia of the Neanderthal Philistine days of
Australian
Television when we had only 5 or 6 channels to choose from ?!?!?

P.S. TV stations ~ more American & less British programing content
pleaze ~!!!!!

Complaining about wasting bandwidth is like complaining about the
wasted energy in ocean waves. Grow up and find something REAL to
complain about. We no longer live in the 70's where bandwidth was an
issue.

I don't see what the big deal is about 15 free to air channels. When I
lived in South Florida, we had at least that many - we lived about half way
between West Palm Beach and Miami, so we received stations from each,
broadcasting on channels 2-69. We got 2x NBCs, 2x FOXs, etc. so there were
4 networks x 2 = 8 channels. Of course, during primetime the programming
was duplicated. Then there were 2 independents, which in 1995 became the WB
and UPN respectively, making 12 channels. Then there was PBS and the
Spanish channel on top of that. This was in 1991.

way between West Palm Beach and Miami, so we received stations from
each, broadcasting on channels 2-69. We got 2x NBCs, 2x FOXs, etc. so
there were 4 networks x 2 = 8 channels. Of course, during primetime the
programming was duplicated. Then there were 2 independents, which in
1995 became the WB and UPN respectively, making 12 channels. Then there
was PBS and the Spanish channel on top of that. This was in 1991.

Freeview confirmed for 2009

By David Knox on July 16, 2008

Filed Under News NOTE: There are now later posts on the state of play
for Freeview than this story, please refer via search function or News
posts.

Freeview will launch in Australian in 2009.

The ABC, SBS, the Seven Network, the Nine Network, Network TEN, Prime,
WIN and Southern Cross have joined forces to deliver the free-to-air
digital television platform. The media companies will comprise a new
not-for-profit organisation, chaired by the ABC’s Kim Dalton.

Freeview will offer 15 television channels from free-to-air
broadcasters on digital platforms, including new channels from the big
three commercial networks. It will not include subscription TV.

Freeview operates in the UK with an EPG at no cost to viewers, with no
satellite dish, no subscription, no ties, no contracts, and no
installation costs.

Press Release:

Australia’s free-to-air commercial television networks together with
the nation’s public broadcasters today formally announced the
establishment of Freeview.

The consortium has been formed to help drive take-up of the free-to-
air digital television platform in Australia.

Freeview shareholders include the ABC, SBS, the Seven Network, the
Nine Network, Network Ten, Prime, WIN and Southern Cross. The ABC’s
Director of Television, Kim Dalton, will Chair the not-for-profit
organisation.

Mr Kim Dalton says Freeview will work to ensure all Australians
continue to enjoy the great range of programming offered by free-to-
air broadcasters as the nation transitions from the analogue to the
digital platform.

“This is an extraordinary step forward for the free-to-air
broadcasters. Together we have pioneered digital television in
Australia, investing millions in infrastructure and converting our
equipment and studios accordingly. Now it’s time for Australians to
reap the rewards; Freeview will offer viewers more channels, great
content and the very best quality picture and sound,” Mr Dalton said.

From next year, Government legislation will allow the commercial free-
to-air networks to broadcast an additional standard definition (SD)
channel each, in addition to their primary SD channels, and their
recently added high definition (HD) channels. The three new channels,
together with the two ABC and two SBS channels and their respective HD
channels, will bring to 15 the suite of channels to be marketed under
the Freeview umbrella.

To receive all the Freeview channels, consumers will need an HD
digital-set-top box, digital video recorder or an integrated digital
television.

Freeview will be launching an awareness campaign in the coming months
to ensure consumers are ready for when the full suite of 15 Freeview
channels are available next year.

Ahead of the launch, Freeview is working with manufacturers to ensure
appropriate technical standards are met on all television or digital
set-top-box equipment that will carry the Freeview badge.

Freeview will work closely with all relevant areas of Government to
ensure consistent messaging.

Kindly link to this site when sourcing or posting in messageboards,
thanks!

2008FREEVIEW UNITES NETWORKS IN THE DIGITAL REVOLUTIONThe digital
television revolution moves a step closer tonight with all of the
nation’s major free-to-air broadcasters uniting for the launch of the
Freeview brand. Australia’s free-to-air broadcasters reach more than
99% of Australian homes. Freeview will offer viewers better picture
quality and more program choices than ever – with access to 15 digital
channels and an Electronic Program Guide on ABC, SBS, the Seven, Nine
and Ten Networks, as well as regional broadcasters WIN, Prime Media
and Southern Cross. Network Heads and CEOs will gather in Canberra
tonight with stars from every free-to-air channel to launch Freeview
with the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital
Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy. At 6.29pm, viewers get their first
taste of Freeview when a 60-second announcement promoting the next
generation of free-to-view digital television goes to air on all
networks around Australia. This is the first time all of Australia’s
free-to-air broadcasters, including the public broadcasters, have
joined forces to pool resources for a major television campaign. It is
a milestone in the drive for the take-up of digital television as
Australia phases out analogue transmission, which is due to switch off
in 2013. As well as much more content being provided on the multi-
channel digital platform, the Freeview Electronic Program Guide (EPG)
will make it simple for viewers to find what they want to watch
quickly and easily on every network. In 2009, most Australian viewers
will be able to receive five High Definition (HD) and 10 Standard
Definition (SD) channels, making a total of 15 Freeview digital
channels. To receive all 15 Freeview channels, along with the Freeview
EPG, households will be able to purchase digital set-top boxes to work
with their existing analogue television sets. These boxes will be
badged with the Freeview logo and available in stores next year. 1/2

costs. The Chair of Freeview, Mr Kim Dalton, ABC Director of
Television, says the new service will change the face of television
while ensuring all Australians continue to enjoy the great range of
programming offered by free-to-air networks. “Freeview is perhaps the
most important thing to happen in Australian television since Bruce
Gyngell made history back in 1956 with those three simple words,
‘Welcome to television’,” Mr Dalton said. “Tonight’s event is historic
because every free-to-air television network is represented. Our
traditional rivalries have been suspended in the name of a shared

Freeview - much ado about nothing?
Friday December 5th, 2008
By Adam TURNER

Australia's free-to-air television networks are desperately trying to
dress up a few extra channels as "the next generation of free-to-view
digital television".

Australia's commercial networks are allowed to broadcast a second
standard-def channel as of next year, boosting the number of free-to-
air networks from 12 to 15. The networks are trying to spruik this as
some amazing new service by branding it Freeview.

The Chair of Freeview, Kim Dalton, ABC Director of Television, said at
the launch that Freeview will change the face of television.

"Freeview is perhaps the most important thing to happen in Australian
television since Bruce Gyngell made history back in 1956 with those
three simple words, ‘Welcome to television’," Dalton said.

How stupid do these people thing we are? Freeview is nothing but a
thinly veiled attempt to fight off the growing competition to the old-
school idiot box. Foxtel is gunning hard to steal away free-to-air
viewers, while ad-skipping PVRs are ensuring those who do watch free-
to-air are evading the advertisements. People are also spending more
time in front of a computer than a television.

If free-to-air television wants to win back viewers, it could start by
treating them with a little respect. Stop starting shows late,
continually switching time slots and canning them before the series is
finished. It's this kind of behaviour that drove people into the arms
of BitTorrent in the first place.

Giving boring old television a lick of paint and calling it a new
service reeks of the kind of contempt for viewers that saw them turn
their back on television in the first place. Freeview needs to be more
than a marketing campaign if it wants to win us back.

Digital TV switch-over a step closer

5th December 2008, 7:45 WST

The analogue television network is a step closer to being replaced
with digital TV, after draft laws allowing for the switch-over passed
federal parliament's lower house. Under the bill, the federal
government can switch off analog TV region-by-region by December 31,
2013.

Labor MP Sid Sidebottom said a staggered switch-over would reduce the
potential for strain on retailers and broadcasters' engineering
resources.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority would have to
provide progress reports.

The Broadcasting Legislation Amendment (Digital Television Switch-
over) Bill 2008 will now go to the Senate.

Joy for couch potatoes: TV networks in digital lure

BY JARED LYNCH

http://www.standard.net.au/news/local/news/general/joy-for-couch-potatoes-tv-networks-in-digital-lure/1383190.aspx

11/12/2008 1:00:00 AM

COUCH potatoes across the south-west will have five new free
television stations to surf next year.

Australia's commercial and public broadcasters have joined forces to
create Freeview -- a free digital television platform which will
replace ageing analogue transmissions.

It will give all the stations one extra standard definition channel
each, bringing the total number of available free-to-air digital
channels to 15.

South-west residents were given a taste of Freeview when it was
advertised this week.

All the broadcasters, except for Network 10, are yet to determine the
content of their new channels.

They could chose to televise replays from their existing channels or
screen fresh content. Network 10 announced it would create a dedicated
sports channel.

ABC director and Freeview chairman Kim Dalton said the platform would
change the face of free-to-air television.

"The free-to-air broadcasters have pioneered digital television,
investing millions in infrastructure and converting equipment and
studios," he said. "Freeview will offer Australians more channels and
more choice, better pictures and sound."

It will be introduced in mid-2009 and be entirely free.

But people will have to buy a digital set-top box, integrated
television or digital video recorder to access the extra channels.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said digital broadcasting was
the way of the future.

"We know that the most successful digital TV outcomes overseas have
been achieved where viewers have been offered enhanced content
choices," he said.

"Freeview promises to enhance the choice and functionality available
on digital free-to-air television."

Analogue transmissions will be switched off in 2013.
